“What if…?” Key Takeaways

I want to be honest with you, I have never thought about writing a sequel to the Behind a TEDx Conference article. But I think that what happened on November 11 deserves to be shared, and I hope you will agree with me.

I would love to do this not only for the almost 200 people who were in waiting list (the Sold Out occurred pretty early) and unfortunately could not attend the event, but also for all the people around the world who read my articles (I am so happy that you are quite a few :)).

Ok but, wait a second, what does it mean “What if…?”? 

“What if…?” is the title of TEDxLakeComo 2017 edition. Its meaning is apparently simple but its facets can be infinite: What if our ideas, passions, intuitions, and dreams become real? Imagine all the stories worth sharing that can arise from this question.

We tried to do our best by selecting 14 speakers with very different backgrounds, histories, and ideas to tell. Everyone had her peculiar personality and the flow of the event got interesting. Although I would love to speak about every single speech in detail, I summarized all of them in one phrase, searching for their key takeaways.

So, which were the key takeaways of this 2017 edition?

• Walter Veltroni: History proved that utopia seems not to exist (e.g., abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, …) because everything became real in the end. What are our current utopias? The future completely lies in our hands.
• Banda Rulli Frulli: Nothing can stop you doing what you love, like playing music in a big band, not even earthquakes.
• Anna Fiscale: Progetto Quid shows how being fragile can be a starting point and not a limit.
• Gianluca Nicoletti: What if autism, the contrary of communication, is the future of communication itself? A new generation of humans, more focused and less distracted? (pernoiautistici.com).
• Frank Raes: Without wonder there is no change. We need to stop and think, for example, what that “Made in China” on our glasses means. It is not normal at all, isn’t it?
• Andrea Bartoli: Favara, a small semi-abandoned village in the middle of Sicily, regained life thanks to the Farm Cultural Park project.
• Giovanni Vecchi: An inclusive culture of economic growth is needed in Italy to overcome the crisis.
• Pat Carra: As a humorist, she talks about the harsh facts of the world, especially from a women point of view, using her funny characters.
• Michele Spagnuolo: With the blockchain it is possible to rewrite certain processes of economic exchange and decrease inequalities, like for example the ABRA App already does.
• Stefano Vella: He presented AIDS as an example to show differences among countries, health must be a public good.
• Pascal Cagni: The phones will be “dead” because maybe some day they will become part of our bodies. Scary? No, probably inevitable.
• Simona Ghizzoni: Women with difficult experiences narrated through pictures. Simona showed how we can find ourselves by looking at other people lives.
• Jürgen Schmidhuber: How the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is the principle and basis for the arise and development of Artificial Intelligence.
• Floraleda Sacchi: She showed us how many facets classical music has (Adagio For Strings / DJ Tiësto Remix made with the harp).

I don’t want you to have an information overload 😀 but if you came to the event, you know what I mean. Sarò onesta con voi, non ho mai pensato di scrivere un seguito dell’articolo Behind a TEDx Conference. Ma penso che quello che è successo l’11 novembre meriti di essere condiviso, e spero che anche voi siate d’accordo con me.

Mi piacerebbe farlo non solo per le quasi 200 persone che erano in lista d’attesa (il Sold Out si è verificato abbastanza presto) e sfortunatamente non hanno potuto partecipare all’evento, ma anche per tutte quelle persone sparse per il mondo che leggono i miei articoli (sono felicissima che siate un bel po’ :)).

Ok ma, aspetta un secondo, cosa vuol dire “What if…?”?

“What if…?” (“E se…?”) è il titolo dell’edizione 2017 di TEDxLakeComo. Il suo significato è apparentemente semplice ma le sue declinazioni possono essere infinite: cosa accadrebbe se le nostre idee, passioni, intuizioni e sogni diventassero reali? Immaginate tutte le storie da condividere che potrebbero sorgere da questa domanda.

Abbiamo cercato di fare del nostro meglio selezionando 14 oratori con esperienze, trascorsi e idee molto diversi da raccontare. Ognuno di loro aveva la sua peculiare personalità e il ritmo dell’evento si è fatto interessante. Anche se mi piacerebbe parlare di ogni singolo intervento nel dettaglio, li ho riassunti tutti con una sola frase, cercando di far emergere i loro punti chiave.

Quindi, quali sono stati i punti chiave dell’edizione 2017?

• Walter Veltroni: la storia ha dimostrato che l’utopia sembrerebbe non esistere (ad es. l’abolizione della schiavitù, il suffragio universale, …) perché alla fine tutto è diventato realtà. Quali sono le nostre attuali utopie? Il futuro è completamente nelle nostre mani.
• Banda Rulli Frulli: Niente può impedirvi di fare ciò che amate, come suonare in una grande band, nemmeno un terremoto.
• Anna Fiscale: Il Progetto Quid mostra come essere fragili possa essere un punto di partenza e non un limite.
• Gianluca Nicoletti: E se l’autismo, il contrario della comunicazione, fosse il futuro della comunicazione stessa? Una nuova generazione di umani, più concentrati e meno distratti? (pernoiautistici.com).
• Frank Raes: senza meraviglia non ci sono cambiamenti. Dobbiamo fermarci e pensare, ad esempio, cosa significhi “Made in China” sui nostri occhiali. Non è affatto normale, vero?
• Andrea Bartoli: Favara, un piccolo villaggio semi abbandonato nel mezzo della Sicilia, ha riacquistato la vita grazie al progetto Farm Cultural Park.
• Giovanni Vecchi: in Italia è necessaria una cultura della crescita economica inclusiva per superare la crisi.
• Pat Carra: come umorista, Pat parla dei fatti difficili del mondo, specialmente dal punto di vista delle donne, per mezzo dei suoi divertenti personaggi.
• Michele Spagnuolo: con la blockchain è possibile riscrivere certi processi di scambio economico e ridurre le disuguaglianze, come fa già ad esempio l’App ABRA.
• Stefano Vella: ha presentato l’AIDS come un esempio per mostrare le differenze tra i diversi paesi, la salute dovrebbe essere un bene pubblico.
• Pascal Cagni: I telefoni “moriranno” perché forse un giorno diventeranno parte dei nostri corpi. Spaventoso? No, probabilmente inevitabile.
• Simona Ghizzoni: donne con esperienze difficili raccontate attraverso le fotografie. Simona ha mostrato come possiamo ritrovarci guardando le vite degli altri.
• Jürgen Schmidhuber: La Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) come principio e base del sorgere e dello sviluppo dell’Intelligenza Artificiale.
• Floraleda Sacchi: Ci ha mostrato quante sfaccettature abbia la musica classica (Adagio For Strings / DJ Tiësto Remix realizzato con l’arpa).
