Between Japan and Korea: My Year With BTS

2018 was without any doubt the year where I decided to change my life completely. You can read some related considerations in one of my previous articles here. Trying to put all the pieces together again was not an easy task. Also, I stopped listening to music daily, because I couldn’t help but remembering my past. But, after a couple of months living in Asia, my eyes and ears got kidnapped by chance by these South Korean boys, BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan, 방탄소년단) and I started enjoying music again.

Of course it’s not all about BTS, I also fell in love with other groups, most of all ONE OK ROCK, a Japanese rock group that touches my real soul, the one of punk-rock and punk-pop (my favorite band will always be Blink-182, while Tom Delonge my favorite singer and artist).

Well, let’s go back to our BTS and sum up a little my year with them, which reached its higher point of satisfaction yesterday, at the Tokyo Dome concert.

From Shin-Okubo to Seoul
As I described in one of my previous articles here, everything began with the neighborhood where I go to school every day: Shin-Okubo, Tokyo’s Korean town. KPOP was something completely new for me, I just studied it in one university course about culture and soft power, and my knowledge was limited to the fact that boy and girl bands are amazingly talented, paired together with a wise use of copyright (almost absence of it). One day a friend sent me a video of a BTS interview, and J-Hope (which then became my favorite one, my “bias”) completely caught my attention. I then started watching their MVs, listening to their music, and trying to understand members’ different personalities and traits. After a couple of months, I had the chance to visit Seoul (related article here), which is the city where BTS live and work. Seeing their advertising, hearing their music in the streets, together with visiting their company was great.

Lyrics and choreographs
I love dancing, you can watch a dance cover I did with a couple of friends for a KPOP contest here. So I like BTS not only for their music, which has beautiful lyrics and often really sensitive and deep topics, or the guys’ voices (both vocal and rap line), or their visuals, but also for their choreographs. J-Hope is the dancer of the group and that’s why I like him the most. He inspired me and made me want to dance again. They also work so hard every day continuously delivering new movies, songs, albums, and concerts. For this reason I can say they are a real source of inspiration.

Fandom
BTS fans are called ARMYs. You probably heard of them before. They belong to all genders and come from all over the world, with an age’s range that spans from 10 to 30 years old and beyond. It is a very big community and I had the chance to interact with some of them through an application. Recently I stopped, but every now and then I contact a couple of friends again. ARMYs have a huge power and are very active on social media, some of them are impressively creative, baking new YouTube videos and funny memes every day.

Concert at Tokyo Dome
Going to a BTS concert and walking in the hyperspace is pretty much the same thing: impossible. Especially in Japan. To get a ticket you have to enter lotteries, and try to win them. I never won one. And if you try through other ways the prices are prohibitive. But I had the chance to go with a friend of my friend, who won the Fan Club tickets, two beautiful seats to be honest! We were so close to the stage. Taking pictures and videos was prohibited, so I just enjoyed the moment. The guys’ show met and exceeded my expectations, they are so talented and gorgeous too! And the amazing light shows made through each person’s light stick paired to the seating made things more than magical. I wish every ARMY to be as lucky as I was.

That’s it. The guys signed a 7 years contract again with their company, Big Hit. I think that even if I will probably stop listening to their music one day, I will be their fan forever. I thank them for their help. And I also thank you, because without my readers (from all over the world!) there wouldn’t be Elly Lakes.

Il 2018 è stato senza dubbio l’anno in cui ho deciso di cambiare completamente la mia vita. Potete leggere alcune considerazioni correlate in uno dei miei articoli precedenti qui. Cercare di rimettere insieme tutti i pezzi non è stato un compito facile. Inoltre, ho smesso di ascoltare musica ogni giorno, perché non potevo fare a meno di ricordare il mio passato. Ma, dopo aver vissuto un paio di mesi in Asia, i miei occhi e le mie orecchie sono stati rapiti per caso da questi ragazzi sudcoreani, i BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan, 방탄 소년단) e ho iniziato ad apprezzare di nuovo la musica.

Naturalmente non si tratta solo dei BTS, mi sono anche innamorata di altri gruppi, soprattutto degli ONE OK ROCK, un gruppo rock giapponese che tocca la mia vera anima, quella del punk-rock e del punk-pop (la mia band preferita sarà sempre quella dei Blink-182, mentre Tom Delonge il mio cantante e artista preferito).

Bene, torniamo ai nostri BTS e riassumiamo un po’ il mio anno con loro, che ha raggiunto il suo più alto punto di soddisfazione ieri, durante il concerto al Tokyo Dome.

Da Shin-Okubo a Seoul
Come ho descritto in uno dei miei articoli precedenti qui, tutto è iniziato con il quartiere in cui vado a scuola tutti i giorni: Shin-Okubo, la città coreana di Tokyo. Il KPOP era qualcosa di completamente nuovo per me, l’ho solo studiato in un corso universitario sulla cultura e il soft power, e la mia conoscenza era limitata al fatto che i gruppi di ragazzi e ragazze fossero incredibilmente talentuosi, insieme ad un uso sapiente del copyright (o la quasi assenza di esso). Un giorno una mia amica mi ha mandato un video di un’intervista dei BTS, e J-Hope (che poi è diventato il mio preferito, il mio “bias”) ha catturato completamente la mia attenzione. Ho quindi iniziato a guardare i loro MV, ascoltare la loro musica e cercare di capire le diverse personalità e caratteristiche dei membri. Dopo un paio di mesi, ho avuto la possibilità di visitare Seoul (articolo correlato qui), che è la città in cui vivono e lavorano i BTS. Vedere le loro pubblicità, ascoltare la loro musica nelle strade, insieme al visitare la loro azienda è stato meraviglioso.

Testi e coreografie
Adoro ballare, potete guardare una cover di ballo che ho fatto con un paio di amici per un concorso KPOP qui. Quindi mi piacciono i BTS non solo per la loro musica, che ha dei testi bellissimi e argomenti spesso molto sensibili e profondi, o le voci dei ragazzi (sia vocali che rap), o la loro bellezza, ma anche per le loro coreografie. J-Hope è il ballerino del gruppo ed è per questo che mi piace di più. Mi ha ispirato e mi ha fatto venire voglia di ballare di nuovo. Inoltre i ragazzi lavorano ogni giorno con tanta dedizione per offrire continuamente nuovi video, canzoni, album e concerti. Per questo motivo posso dire che sono una vera fonte di ispirazione.

Mondo dei fan
I fan dei BTS sono chiamati ARMY. Probabilmente ne avete già sentito parlare. Appartengono a tutti i generi e provengono da tutto il mondo, con una fascia di età che va dai 10 ai 30 anni e oltre. È una comunità molto grande e ho avuto la possibilità di interagire con alcuni di loro attraverso un’applicazione. Recentemente ho smesso, ma ogni tanto contatto di nuovo un paio di amici. La comunità ARMY ha un enorme potere ed è molto attiva sui social media, alcuni membri sono incredibilmente creativi, sfornando ogni giorno nuovi video YouTube e meme divertenti.

Concerto al Tokyo Dome
Andare a un concerto dei BTS e camminare nell’iperspazio è praticamente la stessa cosa: impossibile. Soprattutto in Giappone. Per ottenere un biglietto bisogna partecipare alle lotterie e cercare di vincerle. Non ne ho mai vinta una. E se si prova in ​​altri modi i prezzi sono proibitivi. Ma ho avuto la possibilità di andare con un’amica della mia amica, che ha vinto i biglietti del Fan Club, due bellissimi posti a dire il vero! Eravamo così vicine al palco. Scattare foto e video era proibito, quindi mi sono semplicemente goduta il momento. Lo show dei ragazzi ha incontrato e superato le mie aspettative, sono così talentuosi e fantastici! E i sorprendenti spettacoli di luci realizzati attraverso i gadget luminosi di ogni persona abbinati ai posti a sedere hanno reso le cose più che magiche. Vorrei che ogni ARMY fosse fortunata/o come me.

Questo è tutto. I ragazzi hanno firmato nuovamente un contratto di 7 anni con la loro compagnia, Big Hit. Penso che anche se un giorno smetterò probabilmente di ascoltare la loro musica, resterò loro fan per sempre. Li ringrazio per il loro aiuto.
