Escape to Europe – Road Trip Among Italy, France, and Switzerland

Hello guys! I am back to work on Elly Lakes! On August 11, I said goodbye to Jack who went back to Tokyo after spending a couple of weeks in Europe, where we had our amazing Road Trip among Italy, France, and Switzerland. You can read later about our story to understand why this short period of time was particularly important for me, and for us. Let’s proceed with the trip then, which worked out very well, and you can take inspiration from it!

Warming up: From Ticino to Emilia Romagna and back
On July 27, Jack arrived in Malpensa airport, and I literally had a heart attack: I was meeting my boyfriend after seven months apart! Our video made people cry of joy, we were told (I couldn’t believe it!). After the meeting, we took our rented car ( a cute Fiat Panda with Goldcar) and with my parents we reached Lugano, in Switzerland. The next day I made Jack visit many tourist spots in the city, from Piazza Riforma, Santa Maria degli Angeli church to Ciani Park, where we took a quick bath in the refreshing lake’s water. And after the lake, it is time to visit the sea! We spent the next couple of days in Emilia Romagna, where we met part of my family, ate good food, and enjoyed the sea breeze. After returning from the trip, we celebrated my Birthday with friends and followers in Lugano and relaxed a bit before the real Road Trip had to start.

Road Trip Day 1: Romantic Saint Vincent
After the warming-up, the “real trip” started, which lead us to Annecy, in France, to visit Jack’s grandma, who was the reason he could leave and come back to Japan. To make the trip less stressful, we decided to plan some “stops” while going and coming back to and from Annecy. First leg of the journey was the cute village of Saint Vincent, in Valle d’Aosta, Italy. There, we stayed in the beautiful Paradise Hotel & Wellness, where we could enjoy the SPA and have a plentiful and luxurious breakfast the next day. In the evening we had a romantic dinner at Restaurant Atmosphere with typical Italian cuisine, where I also discovered the craft beers made by “Birrificio Quattro Elementi” (Four Elements Brewery): I enjoyed my “Fire” beer so much! If you did not know yet, I am a huge fan of craft beer (and good wine). After dinner, we visited the Casino de la Vallée, which was very close to our hotel.

Road Trip Day 2: From Cervinia to Annecy
We had an amazing waking up among the mountains! The breakfast was served in the room (thanks to Covid, sometimes there are also good aspects of it). Then we were ready to get on the road again. Since I saw (and conquered the top of) Mount Fuji before seeing its “sister mountain” Cervino (known also as Matterhorn), I really wanted to take at least a picture of it. So, we drove until Breuil-Cervinia to have a look at this stunning mountain. Of course, clouds got into our way, so I could only imagine the missing part of it. It was super cold! We took some pictures and had a pic-nic in our car in the public parking while watching the mountains. After this short stop, we continued our journey towards France. I would like to warn you about the fact that the Tunnel du Fréjus is freaking expensive (50 euros) so it was an undesired surprise of the day. Apart from that, the road in France is a pleasant ride and we got to Annecy at the perfect time for a dinner with French Crepes together with grandma. The rest of the evening we explored the old town (Vieille Ville) where I could experience the “fairy tale” atmosphere of Annecy and take great pictures and videos.

Road Trip Day 3 and 4: Beautiful Annecy
Being grandma’s guests, we spent the mornings, the evenings, and our last lunch with her, while for the rest of the day we explored the city a bit. We saw many beautiful things, like Château d’Annecy (the castle with a great view over the city), Palais de l’Ile (that was an ancient prison), Basilique de la Visitation (very interesting Gothic and Romanesque architecture), Notre-dame de Liesse (another church located in front of a cute square), Parc Charles Bosson (beautiful park near the lake) with Pont des Amours (lovers bridge) and Plage Des Marquisats (where we had lunch sat on the grass). We also had a cruise on the lake of a couple of hours and took a bath in the cold water when we rented a Pedalo for one hour. If you go there for a visit, you will be probably surprised by the colour of the water, so clean and so turquoise that I felt like in the Caribbean. We also found time for a bit of shopping! The heart of the trip resulted to be really pleasant, also from a food point of view: Together with the Crepes I had other good meals like Tartiflette (cheese dish), Tartare (meat dish), and different French tasty desserts.

Road Trip Day 5: From Annecy to Montreux
After a morning by the lake and our last lunch with grandma, we were ready to say goodbye to France and come back to Lugano again, this time passing through Switzerland. We arrived in Montreux in the evening, where we discovered that due to Covid, attractions (such as museums) were totally free for tourists (usually they seem to be discounted by 50%)! We settled in our Hotel Parc & Lac, paid the parking, and had a walk beside the lake. I must admit that Montreux has marvellous and colourful sunsets! Some of the best, in my opinion. We saw Freddie Mercury’s statue, and we continued our walk until we reached the Casino Barrière, where on the first floor there is the original Queen music studio, and the “Queen’s Experience” with an exhibition and the possibility to “play” or listen to their songs in a peculiar way. Montreux was very important for Freddie. Once we visited the little Queen’s museum, we had our dinner at MacDonald’s near the lake, wandered again a bit on the lake promenade and went back to the hotel.

Road Trip Day 6: Montreux and Vevey
Our room was at the top floor of the hotel and from our little window we had an amazing view over the lake, a beautiful wake up for sure! We searched for a place where to have breakfast, and at the Mall by the lake we discovered there was an event dedicated to Manga, Anime, and Japanese culture! It was organized by Polymanga, an event that in Montreux is famous almost like the Jazz Festival. They created a Pop-Up (limited time) Maid Café, where guests can have a snack, watch their favourite Anime, play videogames, and read manga. We enjoyed our breakfast with a view over the lake and had a chat with the founder of the project. We did not have time to stop more because we had to go explore! We first went to the Chillon Castle, which is less than 10 minutes by bus from the city centre. It is extremely huge, perfectly preserved, and very interesting to visit, due to its numerous chambers. If I had children, I would probably bring them there. After the castle’s visit, we had a quick pic-nick by the lake, and then we took the bus (this time 1 hour trip) to reach Vevey, where there is “Chaplin’s World” the amazing Charlie Chaplin’s manor converted in an interesting museum about his life and his movies. I discovered so many things I did not know! And the museum is full of wax statues that seemed so real and reminded me of the ones you can find in a Madame Tussauds museum. After our visit we came back, ate something at Subway, enjoyed the sunset and went back to the Casino to play a bit: All tourists are granted 10 CHF for their first time there! We had some fun at the digital roulette and then went back to the hotel.

Road Trip Day 7: Cheese, aliens, and Medieval Gruyères
We woke up and checked-out from the hotel, prepared the car, and started our new day. First, we went again to the Casino, to take pictures and film the Queen’s Museum, because the first time we did not (near the museum entrance there is a sign that forbids taking pictures, but they told us later that it is limited to the gambling area, which can be seen before entering it, so in the museum you can take as many pictures as you want!). After this little detour, we drove towards the Aquaparc (which entrance was free) but the huge number of people there made us give up on it. We continued our journey towards Gruyères, where we visited La Maison du Gruyère. There, we saw how cheese was made and had lunch with a beautiful Planchette de fromage (cheese board). With our stomach full, we walked up the mountain to reach the Medieval town, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful villages on earth. In Gruyères you will find the “HR Giger Museum” with the artworks of the artist who won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in the film Alien (and you will find alien statues as well). We drunk a juice in the HR Giger bar, which is worth a visit as well (only customers are allowed to take pictures and videos!). After our visit, we rushed down the mountain to grab the car and reach Bern (our last leg of the trip) before dinner. We checked-in at the Ibis Budget Bern Expo, and we dined in my favourite Italian restaurant there, called Luce, having a great pizza.

Road Trip Day 8: Bern and its bears
We woke up in beautiful Bern, did the check-out, jumped on the tram and reached the city centre. I showed Jack around while reaching the bears’ place: We saw the Zytglogge (clock) moving, the Rathaus (city hall) and the cute old streets. I have always been to this city in winter, when the animals were sleeping, and finally this time I could see the giant balls of fur walking around their park! I was so happy! Another funny thing that happens in summer is the people bathing in the river that goes around the old town. They take some floats with them and let the current guide them, it is really fast, so this activity seems pretty dangerous, but fun. Around the city there are some posters warning about the danger of it. After seeing the bears, we climbed up reaching the Rosengarten (Roses Garden) where we had lunch looking down on the amazing view (you can see the entire city centre surrounded by the river!). To finish our short tour, I brought Jack to visit the store called Mephista, which has some interesting steampunk merchandise, and had a final walk around the city centre. We then took the car and started our journey back to Lugano, passing through amazing Alpine passes. We had dinner with my parents at home and Jack prepared the last things for the journey back to Tokyo.

The day after, the goodbye at Malpensa was terrible for us, but full of hope that we will be able to be together soon, it completely depends on Japan. That’s all! I hope you enjoyed the virtual trip and took notes, because I recommend it! Just remember that comparing to Italy and France, Switzerland is pretty expensive, but it is worth it. Ciao ragazzi! Sono tornata a lavorare su Elly Lakes! L’11 agosto ho salutato Jack che è tornato a Tokyo dopo aver trascorso un paio di settimane in Europa, dove abbiamo fatto il nostro fantastico Road Trip tra Italia, Francia e Svizzera. Potete leggere più tardi la nostra storia per capire perché questo breve periodo di tempo è stato particolarmente importante per me, e per noi. Procediamo quindi con il viaggio, che è andato benissimo, e potete prendervi spunto!

Riscaldamento: dal Ticino all’Emilia Romagna e ritorno
Il 27 luglio Jack è arrivato all’aeroporto di Malpensa e ho avuto letteralmente un infarto: Stavo incontrando il mio ragazzo dopo sette mesi di distanza! Il nostro video ha fatto piangere la gente di gioia, ci è stato detto (non potevo crederci!). Dopo l’incontro, abbiamo preso la nostra macchina a noleggio (una tenera Fiat Panda con Goldcar) e con i miei genitori abbiamo raggiunto Lugano, in Svizzera. Il giorno successivo ho fatto visitare a Jack molte località turistiche della città, da Piazza Riforma, la chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli al Parco Ciani, dove abbiamo fatto un veloce bagno nelle rinfrescanti acque del lago. E dopo il lago, è ora di visitare il mare! Abbiamo trascorso i due giorni successivi in Emilia Romagna, dove abbiamo conosciuto parte della mia famiglia, mangiato del buon cibo e goduto della brezza marina. Al ritorno dal viaggio, abbiamo festeggiato il mio compleanno con amici e follower a Lugano e ci siamo rilassati un po’ prima che iniziasse il vero Road Trip.

Road Trip Giorno 1: Romantica Saint Vincent
Dopo il riscaldamento, è iniziato il “vero viaggio”, che ci ha portato ad Annecy, in Francia, per visitare la nonna di Jack, che era il motivo per cui poteva partire e tornare in Giappone. Per rendere il viaggio meno stressante, abbiamo deciso di programmare delle “soste” durante il viaggio di andata e ritorno da e per Annecy. La prima tappa del viaggio è stata il grazioso villaggio di Saint Vincent, in Valle d’Aosta, in Italia. Lì abbiamo soggiornato nel bellissimo Paradise Hotel & Wellness, dove abbiamo potuto godere della SPA e fare un’abbondante e lussuosa colazione il giorno successivo. La sera abbiamo cenato al Ristorante Atmosphere con cucina tipica italiana, dove ho scoperto anche le birre artigianali del “Birrificio Quattro Elementi”: mi è piaciuta tantissimo la mia birra “Fire”! Se non lo sapevate ancora, sono una grande fan della birra artigianale (e del buon vino). Dopo cena, abbiamo visitato il Casino de la Vallée, che era molto vicino al nostro hotel.

Road Trip Giorno 2: da Cervinia ad Annecy
Abbiamo avuto un risveglio incredibile tra le montagne! La colazione veniva servita in camera (grazie al Covid, a volte ci sono anche aspetti positivi). Poi eravamo pronti per rimetterci in viaggio. Dal momento che ho visto (e conquistato la cima del) Monte Fuji prima di vedere la sua “montagna sorella” Cervino (conosciuta anche come Matterhorn), volevo davvero farne almeno una foto. Quindi, abbiamo guidato fino a Breuil-Cervinia per dare un’occhiata a questa splendida montagna. Ovviamente, le nuvole si sono intromesse, quindi ho potuto solo immaginarne la parte mancante. Faceva molto freddo! Abbiamo scattato alcune foto e fatto un pic-nic in macchina nel parcheggio pubblico mentre guardavamo le montagne. Dopo questa breve sosta, abbiamo proseguito il nostro viaggio verso la Francia. Vorrei avvertirvi del fatto che il Tunnel du Fréjus è incredibilmente costoso (50 euro), quindi è stata una sorpresa indesiderata della giornata. A parte questo, la strada in Francia è un bel tratto e siamo arrivati ad Annecy nel momento perfetto per una cena con Crepes francesi insieme alla nonna. Il resto della serata abbiamo esplorato la città vecchia (Vieille Ville) dove ho potuto vivere l’atmosfera “fiabesca” di Annecy e fare splendide foto e video.

Road Trip Giorno 3 e 4: Bellissima Annecy
Essendo ospiti della nonna, abbiamo trascorso le mattine, le serate e il nostro ultimo pranzo con lei, mentre per il resto della giornata abbiamo esplorato un po’ la città. Abbiamo visto molte cose belle, come lo Château d’Annecy (il castello con una splendida vista sulla città), Palais de l’Ile (che era un’antica prigione), Basilique de la Visitation (architettura gotica e romanica molto interessante), Notre -dame de Liesse (un’altra chiesa situata di fronte a una graziosa piazza), Parc Charles Bosson (bellissimo parco vicino al lago) con Pont des Amours (ponte degli innamorati) e Plage Des Marquisats (dove abbiamo pranzato seduti sull’erba). Abbiamo anche fatto una crociera sul lago di un paio d’ore e fatto un bagno nell’acqua fredda quando abbiamo noleggiato un pedalò per un’ora. Se verrete in visita, probabilmente rimarrete sorpresi dal colore dell’acqua, così pulita e così turchese che mi sono sentita come ai Caraibi. Abbiamo anche trovato il tempo per fare un po’ di shopping! Il cuore del viaggio si è rivelato davvero piacevole, anche dal punto di vista gastronomico: insieme alle Crepes ho mangiato altri buoni pasti come Tartiflette (piatto di formaggio), Tartare (piatto di carne), e diversi gustosi dessert francesi.

Road Trip Giorno 5: da Annecy a Montreux
Dopo una mattinata in riva al lago e il nostro ultimo pranzo con la nonna, eravamo pronti per salutare la Francia e tornare di nuovo a Lugano, questa volta passando per la Svizzera. Siamo arrivati a Montreux in serata, dove abbiamo scoperto che, grazie al Covid, le attrazioni (come i musei) erano totalmente gratuite per i turisti (di solito sembrano scontate del 50%)! Ci siamo sistemati nel nostro Hotel Parc & Lac, abbiamo pagato il parcheggio e abbiamo fatto una passeggiata in riva al lago. Devo ammettere che Montreux ha tramonti meravigliosi e colorati! Alcuni dei migliori, secondo me. Abbiamo visto la statua di Freddie Mercury e abbiamo proseguito la nostra camminata fino a raggiungere il Casino Barrière, dove al primo piano si trova lo studio musicale originale dei Queen, e la “Queen’s Experience” con una mostra e la possibilità di “suonare” o ascoltare le loro canzoni in un modo particolare. Montreux è stata molto importante per Freddie. Una volta visitato il piccolo museo dei Queen, abbiamo cenato al MacDonald’s vicino al lago, abbiamo girovagato di nuovo un po’ sul lungolago e siamo tornati in hotel.

Road Trip Giorno 6: Montreux e Vevey
La nostra camera era all’ultimo piano dell’hotel e dalla nostra piccola finestra avevamo una vista incredibile sul lago, una bella sveglia di sicuro! Abbiamo cercato un posto dove fare colazione, e al centro commercale di fronte al lago abbiamo scoperto che c’era un evento dedicato a Manga, Anime e cultura giapponese! È stato organizzato da Polymanga, un evento che a Montreux è famoso quasi come il Jazz Festival. Hanno creato un Maid Café pop-up (a tempo limitato), dove gli ospiti possono fare uno spuntino, guardare i loro anime preferiti, giocare ai videogiochi e leggere manga. Abbiamo gustato la nostra colazione con vista sul lago e abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con il fondatore del progetto. Non abbiamo avuto il tempo di fermarci di più perché dovevamo andare in esplorazione! Per prima cosa siamo andati al Castello di Chillon, che dista meno di 10 minuti di autobus dal centro città. È enorme, perfettamente conservato e molto interessante da visitare per le sue numerose camere. Se avessi dei bambini, probabilmente li porterei lì. Dopo la visita al castello, abbiamo fatto un breve pic-nick in riva al lago, e poi abbiamo preso l’autobus (questa volta 1 ora di viaggio) per raggiungere Vevey, dove c’è il “Chaplin’s World”, il fantastico maniero di Charlie Chaplin convertito in un interessante museo sulla sua vita e i suoi film. Ho scoperto tante cose che non sapevo! E il museo è pieno di statue di cera che sembravano così reali e mi hanno ricordato quelle che si possono trovare in un museo di Madame Tussauds. Dopo la nostra visita siamo tornati, abbiamo mangiato qualcosa al Subway, ci siamo goduti il tramonto e siamo tornati al Casinò per giocare un po’: a tutti i turisti vengono concessi 10 CHF per la prima volta lì! Ci siamo divertiti un po’ alla roulette digitale e poi siamo tornati in hotel.

Road Trip Giorno 7: Formaggio, alieni e Gruyères medievale
Ci siamo svegliati e abbiamo fatto il check-out dall’hotel, preparato l’auto e iniziato il nostro nuovo giorno. Per prima cosa siamo tornati al Casinò, a fare foto e filmare il Museo dei Queen, perché la prima volta non l’abbiamo fatto (vicino all’ingresso del museo c’è un cartello che vieta il fare foto, ma ci hanno detto in seguito che è limitato all’area gioco d’azzardo, che può essere vista prima di entrare, quindi nel museo potete scattare tutte le foto che volete!). Dopo questa piccola deviazione, ci siamo diretti verso l’Aquaparc (il cui ingresso era gratuito) ma l’enorme numero di persone ci ha fatto rinunciare. Abbiamo continuato il nostro viaggio verso Gruyères, dove abbiamo visitato La Maison du Gruyère. Lì, abbiamo visto come veniva prodotto il formaggio e abbiamo pranzato con una bellissima Planchette de fromage (tagliere di formaggi). Con la pancia piena, abbiamo risalito la montagna per raggiungere il borgo medievale, che secondo me è uno dei paesini più belli della terra. A Gruyères troverete il “Museo HR Giger” con le opere dell’artista che ha vinto un Oscar per i migliori effetti visivi nel film Alien (e troverete anche statue aliene). Abbiamo bevuto un succo al bar HR Giger, che merita una visita (solo i clienti possono fare foto e video!). Dopo la nostra visita, ci siamo precipitati giù dalla montagna per prendere la macchina e raggiungere Berna (la nostra ultima tappa del viaggio) prima di cena. Abbiamo fatto il check-in all’Ibis Budget Bern Expo e abbiamo cenato nel mio ristorante italiano preferito, chiamato Luce, mangiando un’ottima pizza.

Road Trip Giorno 8: Berna e i suoi orsi
Ci siamo svegliati nella bellissima Berna, abbiamo fatto il check-out, siamo saliti sul tram e siamo arrivati nel centro della città. Ho mostrato un po’ i dintorni a Jack mentre raggiungevamo il luogo degli orsi: abbiamo visto lo Zytglogge (orologio) muoversi, il Rathaus (municipio) e le graziose strade antiche. Sono sempre stata in questa città in inverno, quando gli animali dormivano, e finalmente questa volta ho potuto vedere le palle di pelo giganti che passeggiavano nel loro parco! Ero così felice! Un’altra cosa divertente che accade in estate sono le persone che fanno il bagno nel fiume che gira intorno al centro storico. Portano con sé alcuni galleggianti e si lasciano guidare dalla corrente, è molto veloce, quindi questa attività sembra piuttosto pericolosa, ma divertente. In giro per la città ci sono alcuni manifesti che avvertono del pericolo che ne deriva. Dopo aver visto gli orsi, siamo saliti raggiungendo il Rosengarten (Giardino delle Rose) dove abbiamo pranzato ammirando il panorama stupendo (si vede tutto il centro città circondato dal fiume!). Per finire il nostro breve tour, ho portato Jack a visitare il negozio chiamato Mephista, che ha alcuni interessanti merchandise steampunk, e abbiamo fatto un’ultima passeggiata per il centro città. Abbiamo quindi preso la macchina e abbiamo iniziato il nostro viaggio di ritorno a Lugano, attraversando incredibili passi alpini. Abbiamo cenato con i miei genitori a casa e Jack ha preparato le ultime cose per il viaggio di ritorno a Tokyo.

Il giorno dopo, l’arrivederci a Malpensa è stato terribile per noi. ma pieno di speranza che potremo stare presto insieme, dipende completamente dal Giappone. È tutto! Spero che il viaggio virtuale vi sia piaciuto e che abbiate preso appunti, perché lo consiglio! Ricordate solo che rispetto all’Italia e alla Francia, la Svizzera è piuttosto costosa, ma ne vale la pena. Non dimenticherò mai questa vacanza.
