Year 2023: Discovering the Concept of Digital Nomadism

Hi my dear followers! Elly Lakes is back, after the longest hiatus of the website since its creation in 2017. I owe you an apology. I feel blessed every single day for the life I have, with its ups and downs, but my mum’s accident in 2022 (she had a brain haemorrhage, from which very few people survive) and the fact that Jack and I separated in mid-2023, gave me such a punch in the stomach that took almost all my energies away. Last summer I had only the strength to work for Mugen Creations (for which I am the HR Director) and travel (by the way, Mr. Fuzzy and Jack are doing ok in France, I will tell you more about this later). Now that the storm calmed down and I got my “mana” back, I will restart writing my articles, feed my social media channels with travel pictures and news, give interviews to the press, help others travelling around the world and much more. Thanks to all of you for being always there for me with your love and support, it helps a lot! You can now read some lovely reviews of my services on the new Elly’s Testimonials page (in progress), while this article, I would love to dive into the concept of “Digital Nomadism” and what it means for me.

Becoming a Digital Nomad
So, let’s get to the point! The title of this chapter says it all. Even if, as I explained in Year 2022: How Remote Work Changed My Life, my 2022 was already packed with trips, the year 2023 made me discover what “Digital Nomadism” really means. Probably because of the nature of my work (which I can do remotely), my family situation (which requires me to go back to Europe quite often), and my dream to travel around the world, I think I can officially call myself a “Digital Nomad”. In 2022 I was already called “Digital Nomad” by “Women Lifting Women” in an interview that you can watch on their YouTube channel. At that time, I did not fully realize what I was really doing, until I experimented with the concept again last summer. So, what does “Digital Nomadism” mean? This term is tricky also for me because it may vary from person to person and circumstances. You will be surprised about how broad this concept seems to be that you may discover to be a Digital Nomad yourself! Remember to let me know what you think in the comments section.

What is Digital Nomadism?
“Digital Nomadism” seems to have different levels of “nomadism” (and this is where the concept becomes “tricky”), but in general it is the condition where a person who can work from their own computer, a “remote worker”, can perform their work from everywhere (not only from “home”), thus becoming “location independent”. Taking advantage of this, the person can decide to work from several locations, which differ from their “base” (where they pay their taxes, to make it simple) being able to juggle between different time zones and environments, experiencing other countries, meeting new people, which can also help in their work or business as a result. I read about people who change their location quite often, others practice nomadism a few times a year, there is no strict rule. Some kinds of jobs can probably make the person also “time zone independent”, for example graphic designers, photographers, video makers, and digital artists, who can work on their products with their own pace and go back to the client for feedback from time to time. In a nutshell, to be a Digital Nomad one needs: a laptop, a smartphone or tablet, a decent level of tech literacy depending on their job, but most of all a good data plan or Wi-Fi connection. Nowadays it is easy to find data reception almost everywhere, and data providers help travellers and nomads get good deals.

Pros and Cons of being a Digital Nomad
Together with being able to experience different places for extended periods of time, the main pro of being a Digital Nomad is simple: freedom. Total or partial freedom, as said before, depends on the nature of a person’s work. For me being able to work from Japan and Europe is already a big deal, and even if I need to relate to the Japanese time zone as much as possible, it does not bother me, for some periods I just have to wake up very early, or work until late at night. And here comes the first challenge: Being able to manage everything, because being a Digital Nomad requires a good level of self-discipline and flexibility. For example, it took me almost one year to change my mindset and unleash the hidden potential of remote work. Another challenge is having to deal with being alone. Even if the number of remote workers increased after the Covid pandemic, a few people seem to live this kind of life, and the trick is not to feel lonely. To limit this, everywhere I go in the world, I try to make new friends or meet old ones, having a lot of patience in between encounters. Finally, another challenge is to be able to save enough money for traveling and manage one’s finances wisely. Going to a cheaper destination than the base of work seems a choice many people make, and having different side hustles to gain more profit is also a good option. “Work hard, play hard” seems the perfect motto for the Digital Nomad life!

A new way of living
While I am still rather new to the concept because I officially started working remotely from 2021, I think that Digital Nomadism is great! It helps me get fresh ideas for work and gather experience for the Elly Lakes project. Diventare un Nomade Digitale
Arriviamo quindi al punto! Il titolo di questo capitolo dice tutto. Anche se, come ho spiegato in Year 2022: How Remote Work Changed My Life, il mio 2022 era già pieno di viaggi, l’anno 2023 mi ha fatto scoprire cosa significa davvero “Nomadismo Digitale”. Probabilmente a causa della natura del mio lavoro (che posso svolgere da remoto), della mia situazione familiare (che mi obbliga a tornare in Europa molto spesso) e del mio sogno di viaggiare in tutto il mondo, credo di potermi definire ufficialmente una “Nomade Digitale”. Nel 2022 ero già stata definita “Nomade Digitale” da “Women Lifting Women” in un’intervista che potete vedere sul loro canale YouTube. All’epoca, non mi ero resa pienamente conto di ciò che stavo facendo, finché non ho sperimentato nuovamente il concetto la scorsa estate. Quindi, cosa significa “Nomadismo Digitale”? Questo termine è complicato anche per me, perché può variare da persona a persona e dalle circostanze. Sarete sorpresi di quanto sia ampio questo concetto che potreste scoprire di essere voi stessi un Nomade Digitale! Ricordatevi di farmi sapere cosa ne pensate nella sezione commenti.

Che cos’è il Nomadismo Digitale?
Il “Nomadismo Digitale” sembra avere diversi livelli di “nomadismo” (ed è qui che il concetto diventa “complicato”), ma in generale è la condizione in cui una persona che può lavorare dal proprio computer, un “lavoratore remoto”, può svolgere il proprio lavoro da ogni luogo (non solo da “casa”), diventando così “località indipendente”. Approfittando di questo, la persona può decidere di lavorare da più luoghi, diversi dalla propria “base” (dove paga le tasse, per intenderci) potendo destreggiarsi tra fusi orari e ambienti diversi, sperimentando altri Paesi, conoscendo nuove persone, che possono anche aiutare nel proprio lavoro o nella propria attività. Ho letto di persone che cambiano località molto spesso, altre praticano il nomadismo poche volte all’anno, non c’è una regola precisa. Alcuni tipi di lavoro possono probabilmente rendere la persona “indipendente dal fuso orario”, ad esempio i grafici, i fotografi, i videomaker e gli artisti digitali, che possono lavorare ai loro prodotti con il proprio ritmo e tornare di tanto in tanto dal cliente per un feedback. In poche parole, per essere un Nomade Digitale sono necessari: un computer portatile, uno smartphone o un tablet, un discreto livello di alfabetizzazione tecnologica a seconda del proprio lavoro, ma soprattutto un buon piano dati o una connessione Wi-Fi. Al giorno d’oggi è facile trovare la ricezione dati quasi ovunque e i fornitori di dati aiutano i viaggiatori e i nomadi a ottenere buone offerte.

Pro e contro dell’essere un Nomade Digitale
Oltre alla possibilità di vivere in luoghi diversi per lunghi periodi di tempo, il principale vantaggio di essere un Nomade Digitale è semplice: la libertà. La libertà totale o parziale, come già detto, dipende dalla natura del lavoro di una persona. Per me poter lavorare dal Giappone e dall’Europa è già una gran cosa, e anche se devo attenermi il più possibile al fuso orario giapponese, non mi disturba, per alcuni periodi devo solo svegliarmi molto presto, o lavorare fino a tarda notte. E qui arriva la prima sfida: riuscire a gestire tutto, perché essere un Nomade Digitale richiede un buon livello di autodisciplina e flessibilità. Ad esempio, mi ci è voluto quasi un anno per cambiare la mia mentalità e liberare il potenziale nascosto del lavoro a distanza. Un’altra sfida è quella di dover affrontare la solitudine. Anche se il numero di lavoratori a distanza è aumentato dopo la pandemia di Covid, sembra che siano in pochi a vivere questo tipo di vita, e il trucco è non sentirsi soli. Per limitare questo aspetto, ovunque vada nel mondo, cerco di fare nuove amicizie o di incontrarne di vecchie, avendo molta pazienza tra un incontro e l’altro. Infine, un’altra sfida è riuscire a risparmiare abbastanza per viaggiare e gestire le proprie finanze in modo saggio. La scelta di andare in una destinazione più economica rispetto alla base del lavoro sembra essere una scelta che molti fanno, e anche avere diverse attività secondarie per ottenere maggiori profitti è una buona opzione. “Work hard, play hard” sembra il motto perfetto per la vita del Nomade Digitale!

Un nuovo modo di vivere
Anche se sono ancora piuttosto nuova a questo concetto, perché ho iniziato ufficialmente a lavorare da remoto dal 2021, penso che il Nomadismo Digitale sia fantastico! Mi aiuta a trovare nuove idee per il lavoro e a raccogliere esperienze per il progetto Elly Lakes.
