Hi everyone, I hope you had the best Christmas and New Year celebrations! We spent them with our families, who came visit us in the beautiful French Riviera. It was the first time in a while that somebody came visit us and not the opposite, so we appreciated it a lot. We also had a very short road trip to Emilia Romagna to meet the relatives I talked about in my previous articles (in 2020 and 2022). So, 2025 has started, but later we will officially say hello to the Year of the Snake, with Chinese New Year and Japanese Setsubun. Now it is time to do our usual recap: Starting from 2021, I like summarizing what happened in the previous year. In this article, together with speaking about my 2024, I will also give you a spoiler of 2025 events, keep reading if you are curious about it!
A powerful start: road trip from Milan to Loch Ness
New Year, new adventures. For the end of 2023, we organized an incredible road trip from Milan (where our guest came from) to Loch Ness. Who does not want to discover the secrets of one of the most famous urban legends of all time? On December 27, Lalla reached us in Lugano by train and then we officially started our journey: We were three people and a cat (Mr. Fuzzy came with us) in a Mini Cooper, who decided to reach Scotland passing through France and entering the UK thanks to the Eurotunnel. The idea was to celebrate New Year looking at Edinburgh castle, then drive to Inverness, say hello to monster Nessie, and come back, visiting many other different cities. In just a few days of holidays we saw many beautiful places, enjoyed amazing sceneries, and ate so much comfort food, that I can consider it as one of my favourite trips of all times. Back to Japan: Say goodbye to Tokyo with a rock concert
After that incredible road trip, I kept staying in Europe and I had to start working remotely again. Later that winter, I also worked remotely from the French Riviera, where I fell in love with Nice in just three hours (complete story here). Once the winter was almost over, it was time for me to say goodbye to everyone (both my family and partner were living in Europe) and go back to my tiny apartment in Japan, the country where I had been living for the past seven years, and where I had my job and life at that time. Well, if you read this article, you know that after a bit more than a month from my return to Tokyo, on April 1st, I was informed that basically half of the company was going to be let go in May, me included, and that I took the decision to leave Japan and move back to Europe (you might remember the cover picture from this post). It was the right thing to do, especially for family reasons. So, I packed my bags, I said goodbye to Tokyo singing at a rock concert with my Japanese friends, and I moved back. The craziest part was the decision to move to the now beloved French Riviera, and to focus on Elly Lakes full-time. Everything happened so fast (more details about my move here), but there were no hard feelings, I am still in contact with my former company, and we collaborate from time to time.
The move to France: a messy and sick start in Nice
My life in France actually started in Grenoble, where Jack was living at that time. We decided to move to the south also for a better climate and scenery, which hopefully would have helped us relax and feel better, after all the previous stressful years. Well, it partly helped indeed, but in the meantime, maybe because of years of “survival mode” abroad, together with the stress of the new apartment search, I constantly got sick. I got an infection on my leg, chickenpox (resulting in scars I had to cure with four months of quite painful treatments, I plan to write an article about it), various viruses, and several colds. I did not have the time to enjoy the seaside as I wished to, but I do not complain, because living in the French Riviera is already a blessing! And anyway, I had the pleasure of attending some concerts and nice evenings anyway. Some of the best things that happened during these months were the new work collaborations, a lot of friends, and of course Vinny, the funniest and cutest dog I have ever met. Being closer to Switzerland (even if the trip takes from five to seven hours, depending on the means of transport) allowed me to stay with my parents every two weeks and help them declutter their house. My mum gave me so many compliments and said I should offer it as a service! I need to thank Japan and its tiny apartments for that, which helped me become a “minimalist recycler”.
Elly Lakes: your access to Japan and the world
As you could see from the previous chapter, 2024 was incredibly messy, but it was also the year where I decided to get serious about Elly Lakes. For seven years since its foundation, I have kept saying it was just a hobby that one day I wanted to transform into a proper business. I remember taking entrepreneurship courses as soon as I graduated from my master’s program, it was something I desired so badly, but my imposter syndrome was strong, and most of all, I needed to learn how to work first, which is very different from getting the best grades at school or university. I remember I started the blog also as a tool to show other companies my worth, which helped me getting hired while I was in Japan. Fate (or maybe not) wanted that I had to create my own VAT number in Tokyo to continue freelancing (it is called T Tax Number, I would like to write an article about it in the future, together with the SIRET number in France) and that is when I shifted from an “employee mindset” to a “business owner” one. Back in Europe I was determined to focus only on my project, an emotion fuelled by my very first clients: So far, I organized several trips to Japan and Europe, I helped finding a house for rent in Tokyo, and I published some influencer campaigns. My last effort of 2024 was the Christmas campaign, which I will probably propose again, also for other occasions, for example by offering free Birthday or Anniversary cards to the ones who want to gift a trip organized by Elly Lakes to a loved one. I still have a long path to walk on, and a lot to learn, the important thing is to never give up!
Spoiler 2025: Going back to Japan for the Osaka Expo2025
Well done! You reached the end of the article; you deserve the spoiler you were looking for: I got hired to work at the Swiss Pavilion at the Osaka Expo2025! I have been to the Milano Expo2015, and I remember I partly worked for it, bringing my university’s Alumni on a field trip when I was working for the USI Career Service, while my other colleague was working at the Swiss Pavilion. I would have never imagined that, 10 years later, I would have been called to work for the same event in Osaka. I remember that in Milan I queued many hours to check out the Japanese and the South Korea pavilions at that time, totally worth it, and an unknown prelude to what my life would have looked like a couple of years later. For the Osaka Expo2025, I am both excited and afraid, because it is a great responsibility, but as usual I will do my very best. All my Japanese friends, Japanese collaborators, and the Swiss Club Tokyo (for which I am still volunteering remotely) were happy to know I will be back and are waiting for me. The Osaka Expo2025 will take place for six months, from April to October, and if you would like to come and visit it, together with a nice trip to Japan, feel free to contact me, I will be happy to help you with the organization.
To sum up, 2024 was another tough year, but not tougher than 2020 or 2022 (should I start hating even numbers?). It was not tougher because, as they say, we always restart our lives “from experience” and not completely from zero. Even if I learnt not to have too high expectations in life, I hope 2025 will have nice things for me and my loved ones, a healthier year at least.

Ciao a tutti, spero che abbiate passato le migliori feste di Natale e Capodanno! Noi le abbiamo trascorse con le nostre famiglie, che sono venute a trovarci nella bellissima Costa Azzurra. È stata la prima volta da un po’ di tempo a questa parte che qualcuno è venuto a trovarci e non il contrario, quindi lo abbiamo apprezzato molto. Abbiamo anche fatto un brevissimo road trip in Emilia Romagna per incontrare i parenti di cui ho parlato nei miei articoli precedenti (nel 2020 e nel 2022). Quindi, il 2025 è iniziato, ma più tardi saluteremo ufficialmente l’Anno del Serpente, con il Capodanno cinese e il Setsubun giapponese. È giunto il momento di fare il nostro consueto riepilogo: A partire dal 2021, mi piace riassumere ciò che è accaduto nell’anno precedente. In questo articolo, oltre a parlare del mio 2024, vi darò anche uno spoiler sugli eventi del 2025, continuate a leggere se siete curiosi!
Un inizio potente: road trip da Milano a Loch Ness
Anno nuovo, nuove avventure. Per la fine del 2023, abbiamo organizzato un incredibile viaggio in auto da Milano (da cui proviene la nostra ospite) a Loch Ness. Chi non vorrebbe scoprire i segreti di una delle leggende metropolitane più famose di tutti i tempi? Il 27 dicembre, Lalla ci ha raggiunto a Lugano in treno e poi abbiamo ufficialmente iniziato il nostro viaggio: eravamo tre persone e un gatto (Mr. Fuzzy è venuto con noi) in una Mini Cooper, che hanno deciso di raggiungere la Scozia passando per la Francia ed entrando nel Regno Unito grazie all’Eurotunnel. L’idea era quella di festeggiare il Capodanno guardando il castello di Edimburgo, poi guidare fino a Inverness, salutare il mostro Nessie, e tornare indietro, visitando molte altre città diverse. In pochi giorni di vacanza abbiamo visto tantissimi posti bellissimi, goduto di scenari incredibili e mangiato così tanto cibo confortante, che posso considerarlo come uno dei miei viaggi preferiti di sempre. Mi piacerebbe scrivere un articolo in futuro al riguardo, ma fino ad allora potete leggere la recensione che la nostra ospite Lalla ha lasciato sull’esperienza. Ritorno in Giappone: addio a Tokyo con un concerto rock
Dopo quell’incredibile road trip, ho continuato a rimanere in Europa e ho dovuto ricominciare a lavorare da remoto. Più tardi, quell’inverno, ho lavorato in remoto anche dalla Costa Azzurra, dove mi sono innamorata di Nizza in sole tre ore (la storia completa è qui). Una volta terminato l’inverno, è arrivato il momento di salutare tutti (sia la mia famiglia che il mio partner vivevano in Europa) e di tornare nel mio minuscolo appartamento in Giappone, il Paese in cui ho vissuto negli ultimi sette anni e dove avevo il mio lavoro e la mia vita in quel momento. Ebbene, se avete letto questo articolo, sapete che dopo poco più di un mese dal mio ritorno a Tokyo, il 1° aprile, sono stata informata che praticamente metà dell’azienda sarebbe stata licenziata a maggio, me compresa, e che ho preso la decisione di lasciare il Giappone e tornare in Europa (forse ricorderete la foto di copertina da questo post). Era la cosa giusta da fare, soprattutto per motivi familiari. Così ho fatto le valigie, ho salutato Tokyo cantando a un concerto rock con i miei amici giapponesi e mi sono trasferita. La parte più folle è stata la decisione di trasferirmi nell’ormai amata Costa Azzurra e di concentrarmi a tempo pieno su Elly Lakes. È successo tutto così in fretta (maggiori dettagli sul trasferimento qui), ma non ci sono stati rancori, sono ancora in contatto con la mia vecchia azienda e di tanto in tanto collaboriamo.
Il trasferimento in Francia: un inizio disordinato e malato a Nizza
La mia vita in Francia è iniziata in realtà a Grenoble, dove Jack viveva all’epoca. Decidemmo di trasferirci al sud anche per un clima e un paesaggio migliori, che si sperava ci avrebbero aiutato a rilassarci e a sentirci meglio, dopo tutti i precedenti anni stressanti. Beh, in parte è servito, ma nel frattempo, forse a causa di anni in “modalità sopravvivenza” all’estero, insieme allo stress della ricerca del nuovo appartamento, mi sono ammalata di continuo. Ho avuto un’infezione alla gamba, la varicella (che ha causato delle cicatrici che ho dovuto curare con quattro mesi di trattamenti piuttosto dolorosi, ho intenzione di scrivere un articolo al riguardo), vari virus e diversi raffreddori. Non ho avuto il tempo di godermi il mare come avrei voluto, ma non mi lamento, perché vivere in Costa Azzurra è già una fortuna! E ho comunque avuto il piacere di assistere ad alcuni concerti e serate piacevoli. Alcune delle cose più belle che sono successe in questi mesi sono state le nuove collaborazioni di lavoro, un sacco di amici e, naturalmente, Vinny, il cane più divertente e più carino che abbia mai incontrato. La vicinanza alla Svizzera (anche se il viaggio dura dalle cinque alle sette ore, a seconda del mezzo di trasporto) mi ha permesso di stare con i miei genitori ogni due settimane e di aiutarli a riordinare la casa. Mia madre mi ha fatto tanti complimenti e mi ha detto che dovrei offrire questo servizio! Devo ringraziare il Giappone e i suoi piccoli appartamenti, che mi hanno aiutata a diventare una “riciclatrice minimalista”.
Elly Lakes: il vostro accesso al Giappone e al mondo
Come avete potuto vedere dal capitolo precedente, il 2024 è stato incredibilmente caotico, ma è stato anche l’anno in cui ho deciso di fare sul serio con Elly Lakes. Per sette anni dalla sua fondazione, ho continuato a dire che si trattava solo di un hobby che un giorno avrei voluto trasformare in un’attività vera e propria. Ricordo di aver frequentato dei corsi di imprenditorialità non appena mi sono laureata al master, era una cosa che desideravo tanto, ma la mia sindrome dell’impostore era forte e, soprattutto, avevo bisogno di imparare prima a lavorare, il che è molto diverso dal prendere i voti migliori a scuola o all’università. Ricordo che ho iniziato il blog anche come strumento per dimostrare ad altre aziende il mio valore, cosa che mi ha aiutato a farmi assumere mentre ero in Giappone. Il destino (o forse no) ha voluto che a Tokyo dovessi creare il mio numero di partita IVA per continuare a lavorare come freelance (si chiama T Tax Number, vorrei scrivere un articolo in futuro al riguardo, insieme al numero SIRET in Francia) ed è stato allora che sono passata da una mentalità da “dipendente” a una da “imprenditore”. Tornata in Europa, ero determinata a concentrarmi solo sul mio progetto, un’emozione alimentata dai miei primi clienti: finora ho organizzato diversi viaggi in Giappone e in Europa, ho aiutato a trovare una casa in affitto a Tokyo e ho pubblicato alcune campagne influencer. Il mio ultimo sforzo del 2024 è stata la campagna di Natale, che probabilmente riproporrò anche per altre occasioni, ad esempio offrendo biglietti gratuiti per il compleanno o l’anniversario a chi vuole regalare un viaggio organizzato da Elly Lakes a una persona cara. Ho ancora un lungo cammino da percorrere e molto da imparare, l’importante è non mollare mai!
Spoiler 2025: ritorno in Giappone per l’Osaka Expo2025
Ben fatto! Siete arrivati alla fine dell’articolo; vi meritate lo spoiler che stavate cercando: sono stata assunta per lavorare al Padiglione svizzero dell’Expo2025 di Osaka! Sono stata all’Expo 2015 di Milano e ricordo di averci in parte lavorato, portando gli Alumni della mia università in gita quando lavoravo per il Career Service dell’USI, mentre un’altra mia collega lavorava al Padiglione svizzero. Non avrei mai immaginato che, 10 anni dopo, sarei stata chiamata a lavorare per lo stesso evento a Osaka. Ricordo che a Milano feci molte ore di coda per visitare i padiglioni del Giappone e della Corea del Sud: ne valse la pena, e fu un preludio sconosciuto di come sarebbe stata la mia vita un paio di anni dopo. Per l’Expo2025 di Osaka sono allo stesso tempo emozionata e spaventata, perché è una grande responsabilità, ma come sempre farò del mio meglio. Tutti i miei amici giapponesi, i miei collaboratori giapponesi e lo Swiss Club Tokyo (per il quale continuo a fare volontariato a distanza) sono stati felici di sapere che sarei tornata e mi stanno aspettando. L’Expo2025 di Osaka si svolgerà per sei mesi, da aprile a ottobre, e se volete venire a visitarlo, insieme a un bel viaggio in Giappone, non esitate a contattarmi, sarò felice di aiutarvi nell’organizzazione.
In sintesi, il 2024 è stato un altro anno difficile, ma non più duro del 2020 o del 2022 (devo iniziare a odiare i numeri pari?). Non è stato più duro perché, come si dice, si ricomincia sempre la vita “dall’esperienza” e non completamente da zero. Anche se ho imparato a non avere aspettative troppo alte nella vita, spero che il 2025 abbia in serbo cose belle per me e per i miei cari, almeno un anno più sano.
