Living Tokyo – Latest News from the Big City

Hey everybody! Have you already seen the latest video on my YouTube channel? It is about my first three months at the Japanese language school. At that time courses were not that difficult, we could relax a bit and make jokes… Sometimes me and my former classmates miss that period, but going further and gain more knowledge is also amazing. So, have a look at it, and tell me what you think!

Exams and scholarships
In my last article Apparent Calm Before the Storm I told you that I would have had six texts and an interview for the school’s scholarship. Well, good news: I passed all the exams with an average of 98% and I got the scholarship! Needless to say that I was super happy about these results. With my former and current classmates we celebrated at Torikizoku, one of our favorite izakaya because it offers all-you-can-eat and drink menus for groups of more than 8 people at a very competitive price. We then of course went to karaoke and the bravest ones also to the club. The day after I had “open classes” at school, where I managed to prepare delicious maki at the sushi lesson (you can see them on my Facebook page).

SCCIJ and Google
Another good piece of news (picture shared on Facebook and LinkedIn) is that I officially became a member of the SCCIJ (Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan). Together with a booklet about cultural affinities across Japan and Switzerland, I received a beautiful pin which made me realize that the Japanese and Swiss flags complete themselves in colors and shapes. Have you ever thought about that?
My first experience with the SCCIJ was then a Luncheon at the luxurious hotel The Peninsula Tokyo, with an interesting speech and Q&A session about Artificial Intelligence conducted by Mr. Peter Fitzgerald, president of Google Japan. In the past I had the pleasure to visit Google offices in Milan (they are so cool!), but the ones in Tokyo are said to be the best. I shook hands with Mr. Fitzgerald and I gave him my business card, he appreciated my logo (yes!). Dreaming does not hurt, so I will let you know if I will ever be able to enter that building 😛

Bad weather and bad feelings
Of course as soon as I finished exams and celebrations, I got sick. In June, during the so called “rainy season”, the weather likes to change rapidly. T-shirts, dresses with or without stockings, sweatshirts only or leather jacket, you do not know what to wear, and the umbrella is always in the backpack. Luckily, between a semester and the other, we have holidays, so I can stay at home without regrets. But I have been stuck in this little apartment for three days so far and I cannot wait to go out again! 🙂

Writing and drawing
On the part-time side, everything is fine. I have written three articles so far, about Koyasan (that you can read here), Naha (Okinawa, here), and Nagoya (still waiting to be published). I created a new album with some aspects of my Japanese life narrated through comics, and an album about what I call “Kanji’s hidden beauty” (please note they are both on Facebook). I am also working on a written interview for a Swiss online magazine about my life in Japan, I will keep you posted about it.

Tonight I saw for the first time Japan playing soccer! It was a great experience 🙂 also because they won! 頑張れ日本!

Ciao a tutti! Avete già visto l’ultimo video sul mio canale YouTube? Riguarda i miei primi tre mesi alla scuola di giapponese. A quel tempo i corsi non erano poi così difficili, potevamo rilassarci un po’ e fare battute… A volte a me e ai miei ex compagni di classe manca quel periodo, ma anche andare avanti e acquisire più conoscenze è bellissimo. Quindi, dateci un’occhiata, e ditemi che cosa ne pensate!

Esami e borse di studio
Nel mio ultimo articolo Apparent Calm Before the Storm vi ho detto che avrei avuto sei esami e un’intervista per la borsa di studio della scuola. Bene, ho buone notizie: ho superato tutti gli esami con una media del 98% e ho ottenuto la borsa di studio! Inutile dire che ero molto felice di questi risultati. Con i miei ex e attuali compagni di classe abbiamo festeggiato al Torikizoku, uno dei nostri izakaya preferiti perché offre menu “all-you-can-eat” e “drink” per gruppi di più di 8 persone ad un prezzo molto competitivo. Poi, naturalmente, siamo andati al karaoke e quelli più coraggiosi sono andati pure in discoteca. Il giorno dopo ho avuto delle “open classes” a scuola, dove sono riuscita a preparare dei deliziosi maki alla lezione sul sushi (li potete vedere sulla mia pagina Facebook).

SCCIJ e Google
Un’altra buona notizia (foto condivisa su Facebook e LinkedIn) è che sono diventata ufficialmente membro della SCCIJ (Camera di commercio e industria svizzera in Giappone). Insieme a un opuscolo sulle affinità culturali tra Giappone e Svizzera, ho ricevuto una bella spilla che mi ha fatto notare come la bandiera giapponese e quella svizzera si completino in colori e forme. Ci avete mai pensato?
La mia prima esperienza con la SCCIJ è stata quindi un Luncheon presso il lussuoso hotel The Peninsula Tokyo, con un’interessante discorso e sessione di domande e risposte sull’Intelligenza Artificiale condotti da Peter Fitzgerald, presidente di Google Japan. In passato ho avuto il piacere di visitare gli uffici di Google a Milano (sono bellissimi!), ma quelli di Tokyo sono considerati i migliori. Ho stretto la mano al Sig. Fitzgerald e gli ho dato il mio biglietto da visita, ha apprezzato il mio logo (si!). Sognare non fa male, quindi vi farò sapere se mai riuscirò a entrare in quell’edificio 😛

Maltempo e cattivi sentimenti
Naturalmente non appena ho finito gli esami e i festeggiamenti, mi sono ammalata. A giugno, durante la cosiddetta “stagione delle piogge”, al tempo piace cambiare rapidamente. T-shirt, abiti con o senza collant, solo felpa o giacca di pelle, non si sa cosa indossare, e nello zaino c’è sempre l’ombrello. Fortunatamente, tra un semestre e l’altro, abbiamo le vacanze, quindi posso rimanere a casa senza rimpianti. Ma finora sono rimasta bloccata in questo piccolo appartamento per tre giorni e non vedo l’ora di uscire di nuovo! 🙂

Scrivere e disegnare
Sul lato part-time, è tutto a posto. Ho scritto tre articoli finora, sul Koyasan (che potete leggere qui), Naha (Okinawa, qui) e Nagoya (che aspetta ancora di essere pubblicato). Ho creato un nuovo album con alcuni aspetti della mia vita giapponese narrati attraverso i fumetti e un album su ciò che chiamo “la bellezza nascosta dei Kanji” (entrambi sono su Facebook). Sto anche lavorando a un’intervista scritta per una rivista online svizzera sulla mia vita in Giappone, vi terrò informati a riguardo.

Stasera ho visto per la prima volta il Giappone a giocare a calcio! È stata una bella esperienza 🙂 anche perché hanno vinto! 頑張れ日本!
