Japan Virtual Tours – From Tokyo Disneyland to Osaka USJ: The Four Best Amusement Parks

Hello everyone! How is your quarantine going? I have stopped talking about coronavirus since my last reflections on Japanese actions, but I am of course keeping myself informed. Unfortunately, Japan had to declare nationwide state of emergency, and I hope things will not get too difficult for them. In the meantime, why don’t we prepare ourselves for better days, with an article about amusement parks?

Amusement Parks Everywhere!
You can find amusement parks almost everywhere in Japan. Inside the city of Tokyo for example, there is the “Tokyo Dome City”, where you pay per ride. I tried the “parachute” and it was super scary! In Nerima city, in the Tokyo outskirts, there is the “Toshimaen” that comprehends some rides and then a big pool for summer. I have been there for the Aquapark, which was very crowded. Yokohama has a great amusement park as well, called “Cosmoworld” where I have been on the Ferris Wheel. One thing I discovered in Japan are the “indoor amusement parks”, like the “Joypolis” in Tokyo’s Odaiba district, where I had so much fun, or the “VR centres”, where I have not been yet.

But let’s jump into the four big ones! After a short description, I will give you my personal suggestions about the best rides to choose depending on your gut’s performance. To have the best experience in one day, for the Disney parks you can start downloading an app that can help you. Then watch out for the abbreviation “FP” (Fast Pass, which means you can do other things while waiting to enter the ride) and “SR” (Single Ride, which means you can reduce your waiting time a lot) beside the names of the attractions.

Tokyo Disneyland
My first time in a Disneyland park was in Tokyo, during the Golden Week, at the age of 26. But it does not disturb me, because I am a kid inside, and I just enjoy everything exactly as kids do. The park is simply amazing and perfectly designed, in any minimum detail (and, as a perfectionist, I appreciated it a lot). Of course, many rides are not scary at all, since the target is composed by families and kids, but they are all enjoyable.
If you like to feel a little bit of thrill, you should go for:
– Space Mountain (FP) (what an adrenaline boost in the dark!)
– Splash Mountain (FP, SR)
– Haunted Mansion (FP)
– Star Tours: The Adventures Continue (FP)
Other very enjoyable (but normal) rides are:
– Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek! (FP)
– Pooh’s Hunny Hunt (FP)
– Pirates of the Caribbean (indoor cruise)
Good shows to watch:
– Country Bear Theatre (funny, with singing puppets)
– Dreaming Up Parade (during the day)
– Night time Parade (in the evening with lights, try to take a good spot before it starts, you will see people preparing for it!)

Tokyo DisneySea
I have been to Tokyo DisneySea in January 2020, just after my last Living Tokyo’s article. It is a special park: First, because it is owned by Oriental Land Company, so it has a special Japanese taste (and also some Japanese mascots too!). Second, the target here is a more mature public, so alcohol is served (e.g., hot chocolate with whiskey, beer, and cocktails), and the rides are more thrilling. I really like the atmosphere and the design of the park. Some people told me that it is better than Disneyland, and I must admit they are right. I particularly went crazy when I saw the Mysterious Island’s setting, which is super steampunk.
Best rides for strong guts:
– Tower of Terror (FP) (I did it twice, because it scared me too much!)
– Journey to the Center of the Earth (FP)
Other enjoyable rides:
– Indiana Jones Adventures: Temple of the Crystal Skull (SR)
– Raging Spirits (SR)
– Toy Story Mania
Indoor cruises:
– 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
– Sindbad’s Storybook Voyage
Other things to do and see:
– The Leonardo Challenge and Fortress Explorations (the best for kids, I enjoyed the Renaissance atmosphere with all the most important thinkers and a funny Leonardo Da Vinci speaking Japanese)
– Big Band Beat (Broadway-like show)
– Fantasmic! (at the end of the day, take a good place near the lake)
I wanted to do “Soaring Fantastic Flight” as well, but it was brand new at that time so there were too many people and I couldn’t go inside.

Fuji-Q Higland
I have been there in January 2019, so there was also the ice-skating ring (but I was too busy riding stuff that I did not go there). If you like real rides as much as I do, then this place is your pa-ra-di-se! I enjoyed it so much and I will never forget those roller coasters!
A list from the most to the least scary:
– Eejanaika (this is the best and the scariest ride I have ever been on in my life! I did it twice)
– Do-Dodonpa
– Fujiyama
– Takabisha
– Tentekomai
– Tekkotsubanchou
– Nagashimasuka
– Fuji Airwaves
– Shining Flower (Ferris wheel)
Of course there are other good rides as well, but you have to make a choice, and the first four listed here are the best. I also did a little one dedicated to “Gaspard et Lisa” but it was mostly for kids. The best part of the park is the view on Mount Fuji, that you can see from land (there is a picture spot) and also from the rollercoasters’ seats while waiting to scream. I suggest you going there for one weekend: One day at the park, stay in one of the hotels at the Fuji Five Lakes region, and the next day have a visit before going home.

Osaka Universal Studios Japan
I have been to the USJ in November 2019, during a long weekend holiday. I had high expectations for the park, which were in part satisfied, because the atmosphere is more the one of an old United States’ city, with some gems like the Harry Potter section (definitely the best part of the park). You can have the single rides also here, but the queues tend to be long anyway.
Best rides for middle-strong guts:
– The Flying Dinosaur (SR, so scary and different from any other ride I have done in my life, I did it twice)
– Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (SR, great, I did it twice)
– Hollywood Dream – The Ride (SR, too much fun, I did it twice)
– Hollywood Dream – The Ride – Backdrop (I did not do, too many people and no SR)
– Space Fantasy (SR)
Other enjoyable rides:
– Jurassic Park – The Ride (SR)
– Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
– The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man – The Ride (SR)
– JAWS
It was Halloween time when I went there so I could enjoy the staff in monsters cosplay during the evening, which was great. I really enjoyed my experience at USJ Japan, it is a good idea to spend one day there and then continue with an Osaka visit the next day.

Parchi divertimento ovunque!
Potete trovare parchi divertimento quasi ovunque in Giappone. All’interno della città di Tokyo, ad esempio, c’è la “Tokyo Dome City”, dove si paga per ogni corsa. Ho provato il “paracadute” ed è stato davvero pauroso! Nella città di Nerima, nella periferia di Tokyo, c’è il “Toshimaen” che comprende alcune corse e poi una grande piscina per l’estate. Sono stata lì per l’Aquapark, che era molto gremito di gente. Yokohama ha anche un grande parco cittadino, chiamato “Cosmoworld”, dove sono stata sulla ruota panoramica. Una cosa che ho scoperto in Giappone sono i “parchi di divertimento al coperto”, come il “Joypolis” nel quartiere Odaiba di Tokyo, dove mi sono divertita tanto, o i “centri VR”, dove però non sono ancora stata.

Ma passiamo ai quattro più grandi! Dopo una breve descrizione, vi darò i miei suggerimenti personali sulle migliori corse da scegliere a seconda delle prestazioni del vostro stomaco. Per avere la migliore esperienza di un giorno, nei parchi Disney potete iniziare a scaricare un’app che vi può aiutare. Quindi fate attenzione alle sigle “FP” (Fast Pass, il che significa che potete fare altre cose in attesa di entrare nella giostra) e “SR” (Single Ride, il che significa che potete ridurre di molto il tempo di attesa) accanto ai nomi delle attrazioni.

Tokyo Disneyland
La mia prima volta in un parco Disneyland è stata a Tokyo, durante la Golden Week, all’età di 26 anni. Ma non mi importa, perché sono una bambina dentro e mi piace tutto proprio come fanno i bambini. Il parco è semplicemente fantastico e perfettamente progettato, nei minimi dettagli (e, come perfezionista, l’ho apprezzato molto). Certo, molte giostre non fanno affatto paura, poiché l’obiettivo è composto dalle famiglie con bambini, ma sono tutte divertenti.
Se vi piace provare un po’ di brivido, dovreste provare:
– Space Mountain (FP) (che adrenalina nel buio!)
– Splash Mountain (FP, SR)
– Haunted Mansion (FP)

Altre giostre molto divertenti (ma normali) sono:

– Night time Parade (la sera con le luci, cercate di prendere un buon posto prima che inizi, vedrete le persone prepararsi apposta!)

Tokyo DisneySea
Sono stata a Tokyo DisneySea nel gennaio 2020, subito dopo il mio ultimo articolo di Living Tokyo. È un parco speciale: in primo luogo, perché è di proprietà di Oriental Land Company, quindi ha uno speciale gusto giapponese (e anche alcune mascotte giapponesi!). In secondo luogo, l’obiettivo qui è un pubblico più maturo, quindi viene servito alcol (ad esempio, cioccolata calda con whisky, birra e cocktail) e le giostre sono più elettrizzanti. Mi piace molto l’atmosfera e il design del parco. Alcune persone mi hanno detto che sia meglio di Disneyland e devo ammettere che hanno ragione. In particolare sono impazzita quando ho visto l’ambientazione di Mysterious Island, che è super steampunk.
Le migliori corse per i coraggiosi:
– Tower of Terror (FP) (l’ho fatto due volte, perché mi ha spaventata troppo!)

– Fantasmic! (alla fine della giornata, prendete un buon posto vicino al lago)
Volevo fare anche “Soaring Fantastic Flight”, ma all’epoca era nuovo di zecca, quindi c’erano troppe persone e non sono potuta entrare.

Fuji-Q Higland
Sono stata lì a gennaio 2019, quindi c’era anche un ring per il pattinaggio sul ghiaccio (ma era troppo occupata a salire sulle giostre che non ci sono andata). Se vi piacciono le vere giostre tanto quanto me, allora questo posto è il vostro pa-ra-di-so! Mi è piaciuto così tanto e non dimenticherò mai quelle montagne russe!
Un elenco da quella più e quella meno spaventosa:
– Eejanaika (questa è la corsa migliore e più spaventosa che abbia mai visto in vita mia! L’ho fatta due volte)
– Do-Dodonpa
– Fujiyama

Naturalmente ci sono anche altre buone giostre, ma dovete fare una scelta, e le prime quattro elencate qui sono le migliori. Ne ho fatta anche una dedicata a “Gaspard et Lisa” ma era principalmente per bambini. La parte migliore del parco è la vista sul Monte Fuji, che potete vedere da terra (c’è un punto panoramico) e anche dai sedili delle montagne russe in attesa di urlare. Vi consiglio di andarci per un fine settimana: un giorno al parco, soggiornate in uno degli hotel nella regione del Fuji Five Lakes e il giorno successivo fate una visita prima di tornare a casa.

Osaka Universal Studios Japan
Sono stata all’USJ a novembre 2019, durante un lungo fine settimana di vacanza. Avevo grandi aspettative per il parco, che sono state in parte soddisfatte, perché l’atmosfera è più simile a quella di una vecchia città degli Stati Uniti, con alcune gemme come la sezione di Harry Potter (sicuramente la parte migliore del parco). Potete avere le corse singole anche qui, ma le code tendono ad essere lunghe comunque.
Le migliori giostre per uno stomaco medio-forte:
– The Flying Dinosaur (SR, così spaventoso e diverso da qualsiasi altra giostra che ho fatto nella mia vita, l’ho fatta due volte)
– Harry Potter e il viaggio proibito (SR, fantastico, l’ho fatto due volte)
– Hollywood Dream – The Ride (SR, troppo divertente, fatto due volte)
– Hollywood Dream – The Ride – Backdrop (non l’ho fatto, troppe persone e senza SR)
– Space Fantasy (SR)
Altre giostre divertenti:

Era tempo di Halloween quando sono andata lì, così ho potuto godermi lo staff in cosplay di mostri durante la sera, il che è stato fantastico. Mi è davvero piaciuta la mia esperienza all’USJ in Giappone, è una buona idea passare un giorno lì e poi continuare la visita a Osaka il giorno successivo.
